Lowest friction in the region, mining-led industrial demand

The lowest-friction market in the region. Stable institutions, predictable procurement and a developed financial sector. Mining and its supply chain dominate industrial demand.

Small in absolute terms. Treat it as a proving ground or as a mining-sector play, not as a volume market.

What the numbers say

Chile has the highest income per head of the four Latin American markets at 17,995 dollars, roughly 30 per cent above Mexico and more than double Guatemala. It attracted 14.5 billion dollars of foreign direct investment in 2025 with a fifth of Mexico's population, which is the clearest available measure of how straightforward it is to operate here.

The limit is absolute size. Twenty million people and 2.5 per cent growth will not carry a volume case on their own. Chile works as a proving ground, where procurement is predictable and contracts are enforced, and as a mining play: it produced 5.3 million tonnes of copper in 2025, close to a quarter of world output.

  • Partner, client and supplier identification

Distributors, agents, clients and suppliers, with background checks and arranged B2B meetings.

Four things that change the plan

Checked September 2026. Every figure below is linked to the institution that published it, with the period it refers to.

The EU and Chile Interim Trade Agreement entered into force on 1 February 2025 and eliminates tariffs on 99.9 per cent of EU exports to Chile. For a European exporter this is about as clean a market access position as Latin America offers. It also resets the competitive question, because every European competitor received the same thing on the same day. The advantage now sits in who moves first on channel and on people, not in the tariff line.

Chile's reputation for low friction does not survive contact with its environmental permitting. In 2025 a full environmental impact study averaged 790 days in evaluation and the lighter declaration averaged 304 days, with 77 per cent of projects exceeding the timeframe the legislation anticipates. On the same restated basis the 2024 figures were 776 and 325 days, so the heavy end got slower and more of everything overran, while the lighter declaration improved. Chile is predictable in the sense that contracts are enforced and procurement is clean. It is not fast. Anything that needs an environmental permit should be planned in years, not quarters.

Cochilco's mining investment portfolio for 2025 to 2034 is 104.5 billion dollars, of which 41 per cent is in execution, meaning approved, permitted and in detailed engineering, construction or commissioning. The remainder sits at feasibility, prefeasibility or conceptual engineering. Copper is 89.8 per cent of the total. A supplier who sizes the opportunity off the headline number is sizing a market that is mostly not yet funded. Sell into the 41 per cent and track the rest as a pipeline rather than as demand.

Selling to Codelco starts with registration, not with a bid. The supplier registry is administered by the Santiago Chamber of Commerce through the RedNegocios platform: you register, name Codelco as the contracting party along with your industrial categories, pay an annual fee and submit documentation within ten days. Registration then enables you in Codelco's purchasing portal, which runs on SAP Ariba. Codelco awards through open tenders, private tenders and direct negotiation, so registration is the gate to all three routes rather than to any one of them. Treat it as lead time, because it sits in front of the first opportunity rather than after it.
