What Chilean mining will be buying until 2034

The pipeline is 104.5 billion dollars and 41 per cent of it is funded. Sizing your opportunity off the headline is sizing a market that mostly has not been approved yet.

Short answer. Cochilco put the 2025 to 2034 pipeline at 104,549 million dollars in December 2025, of which 41 per cent is in execution, meaning approved, permitted and in detailed engineering, construction or commissioning. The rest sits at feasibility, prefeasibility or conceptual engineering. Copper is 89.8 per cent of the total, and water is the clearest structural demand line.

Every trade publication that covers Chile quotes the headline pipeline number. Almost none of them quotes the split, and the split is the entire difference between a demand forecast and a press release.

The number, and the part of it that is real

Cochilco's mining investment portfolio for 2025 to 2034, published in December 2025, totals 104,549 million dollars. It is the largest in more than a decade, up 21,369 million on the previous edition. Copper is 89.8 per cent of it.

By project stage: 41 per cent is in execution, meaning investment approved and permits obtained, currently in detailed engineering, construction or commissioning. Twenty-six per cent is at feasibility, 29 per cent at prefeasibility and 4 per cent at conceptual engineering.

Consejo Minero's March 2026 deck, drawing on the same Cochilco data, tabulates 44,427 million dollars in execution against 57,727 million in evaluation. Note that those two sum to 102,154 rather than to Cochilco's 104,549, so it is a narrower universe of projects rather than the same total expressed differently. Do not mix the two sets or compute a percentage across them.

For a supplier, those two categories are entirely different products.

The 41 per cent is a market. Approved, permitted, engineered, with a schedule and a procurement function already spending. If you are qualified, this is where orders come from in the next twenty-four to thirty-six months.

The 59 per cent is a pipeline. Real, well-documented, and dependent on board approval, commodity prices and permits. Some of it will be built, some will be deferred, some will not happen. Treated as demand it will make your forecast wrong; treated as a watchlist it tells you which buyers to be qualified with before the approval lands.

Why the unfunded half is genuinely uncertain

Because of permitting, and because Chile's permitting position is worse than its reputation.

On the Universidad San Sebastian permitting index, a full environmental impact study averaged 790 days in evaluation in 2025, and 77 per cent of projects exceeded the timeframe the legislation anticipates. Chile legislated in September 2025 to improve this, and the reform expressly leaves environmental assessment out. We set out what that means for a project timetable in does Chile's permitting reform make Chile faster.

The consequence for a supplier's forecast is the part that belongs here: a project at feasibility stage is at least two to three years from a purchase order for long lead equipment, and that is the assumption to plan against.

The one demand line that is structural rather than cyclical

Water. Cochilco published a projection of water demand in copper mining for 2025 to 2034 in March 2026, showing demand rising from 18.5 cubic metres per second in 2024 to 20.6 in 2034, with seawater consolidating as the sector's principal supply source.

That is a specific, dated, published forecast of a physical requirement in a desert, and it is the clearest demand signal in the whole portfolio. It pulls through desalination plants, high pressure pumping, long distance pipelines, corrosion-resistant materials, power for all of it, and the instrumentation and control layer above.

If you supply into any part of that chain, the water projection is a better targeting document than the investment portfolio, because it describes a requirement that does not go away if the copper price falls.

Where the buying is concentrated geographically

Antofagasta. Consejo Minero published a study on 27 August 2026, produced with the Instituto de Politicas Publicas of the Universidad Catolica del Norte and the consultancy Gestion Social, putting local mining purchasing in the Antofagasta region at 2.65 billion dollars today, with a projection of between 5.1 and 11.3 billion by 2035.

Note the width of that range. It is an honest projection rather than a confident one, and the gap between the low and high case is roughly the same size as the current market. Use the low end for planning.

The same study found that 53 per cent of the barriers suppliers reported concerned networks and access to procurement processes rather than technical capability. That is a study of Chilean suppliers competing for local content, and the implication for a European supplier is that a local partner or a local presence in Antofagasta is worth more than an incremental improvement in the product.

What to do with all of this

Target by stage, not by headline. Ask any project you are chasing which category it is in, and treat "feasibility" as a reason to be registered rather than a reason to forecast.

Be qualified before the approval, because the gap between board approval and long lead procurement is short and the qualification is not. That process is set out in selling to Chilean mining.

And check whether your equipment needs Chilean electrical certification before you quote a delivery date: CE marking is not enough.

Common questions

How big is Chile's mining investment pipeline?

Cochilco put it at 104,549 million dollars for 2025 to 2034 in its December 2025 report, the largest in over a decade, with copper accounting for 89.8 per cent.

How much of Chile's mining pipeline is actually funded?

Forty-one per cent is in execution, meaning approved, permitted and in detailed engineering, construction or commissioning. The remaining 59 per cent sits at feasibility, prefeasibility or conceptual engineering and is not committed spending.

What will Chilean mining spend money on to 2034?

Copper dominates the portfolio at 89.8 per cent. The clearest structural line is water: Cochilco projects copper mining water demand rising from 18.5 cubic metres per second in 2024 to 20.6 in 2034, with seawater consolidating as the principal source, which pulls through desalination, pumping, pipelines and the associated power and control equipment.

Where in Chile is mining procurement concentrated?

Antofagasta. A study published by Consejo Minero on 27 August 2026, with the Instituto de Politicas Publicas of the Universidad Catolica del Norte and Gestion Social, put local mining purchasing there at 2.65 billion dollars, projected to reach between 5.1 and 11.3 billion by 2035.
